I thought this might be very useful info since not everyone knows the signs of a stroke. In August 1998 my mother was talking gibberish, nothing made any since and I knew right away she was having a stroke. I called 911 and she was taken by ambulance to the ER. I don't know how long she had been having the stroke. It could have happened earlier in the day. Unfortunately they weren't able to reverse her condition. I don't know if they even administered the drug that could have helped her in the first 3 hours of the stroke. She passed away March 29, 2003, just 4 days after her 75th birthday. I miss her terribly. I hope this is helpful to you!

It only takes a minute to read this...A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)(i.e. It is sunny out today)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this:
Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

I knew about these due my occupation in the field of Occupational Therapy. I frequently work with those who have had a stroke. The tongue one I had not heard yet. So thank you for passing that on. You are right that not every one knows these simple steps to help you realize what is going on.
I think that I'll put this on my fridge...until we all memorized the signs!
